I'll post here what I was going to post on one of your posts at your LJ. And also say that there's no thanks needed, none at all. =)
It never once occurred to me that this might have been a scam - why? Because of Katy. Because I know her (and her pervy self and it's a privelege -- and sometimes a worry, hee! -- to know both) and I know that she'd go above and beyond for someone who she felt deserved it and you're obviously one of those people.
Now I am, I admit, a sometime-sucker for a sob story. But I'm also as cynical as hell these days so using that balance, the cynical side of me could've come out and just said WTH, NO.
But it didn't. Why? Because, and I hope this makes sense in light of what you wrote in that letter, you don't come across as being one of those people who gives their sob story out to everyone. You've obviously struggled in asking people for help and when you did, you did it in the most humble of ways. You didn't ask people to buy anything or even donate anything (and you still had issues releasing your PayPal address). As it stands, all I can do is download anyway, though I truly do wish I could do more.
I hope that you reach your goal soon and I'll continue to download and badger my internet-having-family into doing the same every time I'm at the computer. :) *hugs*
